We're going to keep this very simple and fast:

Write a web-accessible mashup using the new NYT newswire API @ http://bit.ly/11amDC and Calais. Do something cool and do it fast.

(Update: Use of the other new NYT News API's is also eligible)

Entries are due Friday 3/6. Send entries to team@opencalais.com with "NYT Mashup" in the title so we don't lose them.

Depending on the number of entries we may 1) puzzle over them that weekend and announce a winner), or 2) come up with some community voting mechanism (anybody know a good off-the-shelf option?).

U.S. Residents only (sorry - but the Kindle is not much use elsewhere anyway).

Will have to add a couple basic big company rules later - but they won't get in the way. Start building!

Here's how it works:

On the main page, you can explore recent articles by clicking on their headline to the left. Doing so loads up some basic NYT-supplied metadata about the article, followed by OpenCalais tagging of the article. Click on a tag name to explore the linked data associated with the tag. For example, clicking on "Iraq" would bring up a map, and some related links. Locations and large corporations seem to be the most complete. Since some tags are ambiguous (There are about a dozen or more cities named "Washington") you may be first presented with a list of disambiguation options. This takes a bit more time to load. Click on one of the red disambiguation options to see the details.

The second page to explore can be reached by clicking the "Trends" link at the top-right of the page. Doing so lists the top tags for the last week or so, listed from most to least. Each tag type is also listed so that you can see popular tags for that type. For example, you can see which cities or sports are most often mentioned in the NYT.

Articles are retrieved and tagged hourly, so logging in again later in the day gives you a bit more to explore.

John David Anderson

Looks like the Kindle may be going international soon!

If this job posting by lab126.com, Amazon’s secret hardware skunkworks, is any indication, there will be an International version of the Kindle sooner than later.
