THOMSON REUTERS DEBUTS COMMERCIAL OPTIONS FOR ITS CALAIS WEB SERVICE TO MEET PUBLISHER AND ENTERPRISE DEMAND

Meets Market Need for MetaData Generation with Increased Capacity, Affordable Licensing and the Option to Deploy Calais Within the Enterprise

EmTech'08 Conference -- Cambridge, MA -- September 24, 2008 -- In response to publisher and enterprise demand, Thomson Reuters (NYSE: TRI; TSX: TRI; LSE: TRL; NASDAQ: TRIN), the world's largest provider of intelligent information, is offering commercial options for its Calais Web service, bringing reliable metadata generation services to companies of all kinds.

Found at OpenCalais.com, the Calais Web service makes it easy to tag the people, places, facts and events in content, increasing its relevance and search accessibility.  The new commercial options offer increased capacity and customization for publishers and businesses that require service-level agreements and/or a deployed version of Calais that can live behind their firewall.

"The Calais Web service, its open API, and the resources at OpenCalais.com will always be free to both commercial and non-commercial developers," said Thomas Tague, Calais initiative lead at Thomson Reuters.  "The commercial options were designed specifically in response to demand from users that require enhanced service levels or an on-site installation to support their business models.  We are pleased to provide them with the customization, scalability and peace of mind they need in order to build Calais into their networks, sites and services."

The Calais suite of services now includes OpenCalais; Calais Professional; Calais Professional for Publishers, and ClearForest On-Premise Solutions.

  • OpenCalais includes the free Calais Web service, its open API and the resources at OpenCalais.com.  It offers the full Calais functionality, and enables users to submit up to 40,000 content transactions per day at a maximum rate of four transactions per second.*
  • Calais Professional provides the same OpenCalais functionality with a high-performance service-level agreement, 24x7 monitoring, an increased daily content transaction limit of 100,000, and an enhanced rate of 20 transactions per second.  Additional transaction volume blocks of up to 2,000,000 transactions per day are also available.
  • Calais Professional for Publishers extends Calais Professional to meet the needs of larger scale publishers and is available as an annual contract.
  • ClearForest On-Premise Solutions are installed, customized versions of the Calais Web service - which is built on ClearForest technologies - within a company's processing environment that can easily scale to tens of millions of content transactions per day and many thousands of transactions per minute. In addition to the core OpenCalais functionality, ClearForest On-Premise Solutions give users the ability to modify their instance of the underlying metadata generation engine to create new entities and relations, and to incorporate user lexicons.

Related Calais toolkits and applications include:

  • SemanticProxy, a free Calais application - now in beta testing - that makes it easy to generate rich semantic metadata for Web pages by feeding their URLs into the tool at SemanticProxy.com
  • The Calais Marmoset Toolkit, a simple yet powerful way to generate metadata for Yahoo! Search's SearchMonkey, as well as other metadata crawlers and semantic applications.
  • The Calais Tagaroo Plugin, which helps WordPress bloggers matatag their blog posts -- and add relevant photos from Flickr -- to increase both visual appeal and search accessibility.
  • The Calais Modules for Drupal, which enable Drupal users to tag their content, generating semantic metadata that can be shared via a simple key with the larger content universe.

All of the above services employ Calais 3.0, the most robust and high-performance version of the Calais Web service to date.  To learn more about these tools and more, visit the OpenCalais blog.

*Note that the Calais team evaluates requests for higher content transaction limits in the OpenCalais service from academic, research and other non-profit or experimental users on a case-by-case basis.
