REST java client

Hi to all,
I am trying to use the REST java client.  My difficulty is where to enter the input_dir and output_dir so the client can process some file/s.  I have put the RESTclient code in a java project.
Can anyone help me please as I have been reading forum posts and calais docs all day but still cannot get an idea of where actually I need to start.
