Although I've been aware of this project for a while I've only recently really began to try and work with it. I work on a concept mapping tool, and I'd like to use OpenCalais to do an analysis of metadata attached to a node on a map, use the extracted entity to seed some suggested queries for logically building out your map. In my test case I have a node about the artist Edouard Manet, with a description of Manet and his work. Unfortunately, Calais never identifies Manet, I was wondering if this is a character set problem caused by diacritics but either way the artist is never identified. How do I know what People Calais is able to identify or why it doesn't work for my particular case?

I'm using some info from wikipedia and the open calais submission tool to test, any advice would be appreciated.

Does Calais also struggle with names written Last Name, First Name or is that just my perception? For instance it can't seem to pick out Abraham Lincoln from the first paragraph of his biography on Britannica since the page title is Lincoln, Abraham.
Mike
I tried few examples and they didn't work for me either.
At this point this issue added to the bug list and we'll try to address is as soon as possible.
Keep sending us important feedback like this..
Thanks,
Michal
This has been fixed.
Hi Mike,
This was indeed a problem, however it was addressed in our latest release (R4).
R4 is currently on tech preview, you can test it either by pointing to the web service URL beta.opencalais.com, or you can also use our interactive viewer here: http://opencalais.com/applications/calais-document-viewer.
I tried the sentence: "Édouard Manet was a French painter." in this viewer and the name was picked up correctly.
Let us know if that works for you too.
Regards,
