Butterflyzer

Submitted by Miles Parker on May 09, 2011 - 19:11

Butterflyzer is a unique desktop application for researching, cataloging, analyzing, and visualizing social media and related events. Unlike other social media analysis tools, Butterflyzer doesn't give you the answers.. we don't even tell you what questions to ask! Instead, Butterflyzer is like an in-house geek, research assistant, and librarian for the web. It can help you find and quickly integrate information you need from various sources -- including Twitter, Topsy, Google Insights, PlaceMaker and other web sources -- and enriches that information with semantics provided by OpenCalais, allowing you to quickly focus on specific issues and events.

Pre-requisites: Visual Studio Tools for Office runtime 3.0. Make sure your Visual Studio IDE is able to open Outlook 2007 add-in projects.

Just run the attached add-in project from your visual studio or build a setup project and install the setup. The setup should install Outlook add-in on your machine. You should have registry editing rights for the add-in to install and load itself successfully with Outlook.

Once the add-in is installed, see the magic when you receive a new mail containing names of companies, persons, cities. Courtesy: http://www.opencalais.com. This is useful when you want to know more about texts in your mails without actually Googling it.

Faveeo.com

First of all, all content that comes into faveeo.com (15k articles per day at the moment) is automatically tagged by using the Open Calais web service, (www.opencalais.com) that itself is directly connected to the semantic web. This means that all the incoming content is properly organized and tagged for several topics including People, Organizations, Countries, Music Bands, Sports teams, etc.

This really advanced categorization not only helps users find information related to their tastes and interests but also allows us to provide high quality recommendations based on the tags applied to the nodes you read, click on and of course, vote on.

twitter trend tags

Submitted by dorjeduck on March 26, 2010 - 13:40

The twopular engine feeds the web service Calais every five minutes with the most recent tweets behind the current twitter trends in order to determine tags for these trends. This so generated tag meta level for twitter trends gives us first of all another way of searching for trends and more important the possibility to interrelate trends based on tag similarity. More of a linguistic experiment right now yet the first results seem to be promising.
